Since 2008, Verizon has published an annual Data Breach Investigations Report that provides an analysis of information security incidents, with a specific focus on data breaches across various industries. The report is produced by the Verizon RISK (Research, Investigations, Solutions, Knowledge) team within Verizon’s Enterprise Services business unit. The report data set is a combination of data from both public and private organizations worldwide, including law enforcement agencies, research institutions, private security firms, national incident reporting entities, and Verizon. All of the data, including case studies, reports and interviews are standardized using the Vocabulary for Event Recording and Incident Sharing (VERIS) Framework. The information compiled in the report is used to identify common attack patterns including, web application attacks, insider threats, point of sale intrusions, physical theft, crimeware, payment card skimmers, cyber espionage and more.
