As my 12-week internship at Intrinium is coming to an end, I can’t help but reflect on the knowledge and skills that I have gained. When I had applied for the Information Security intern position, I had no idea what I was getting myself into, let alone, what career path I wanted to pursue. Because I’m studying Management Information Systems and Computer Science, I was open to exploring different careers in hopes of finding one that I would be passionate about. My 12 weeks at Intrinium has allowed me to grow personally, but it also allowed me to apply previous coding skills and new knowledge from my business courses.
One important skill that I have learned during my internship is being able to communicate proactively, whether it was communicating to my boss if I’m not able to finish a task on time or wanting to take on a project that I was interested in. Since the skill of communicating proactively is one of Intrinium’s pillars, I immediately saw this in action during the first week of my internship. I admire how the employees are transparent with each other when it comes to the well-being of the company and this transparency translates to the relationship they have with their clients. When I would listen in on phone calls with the clients, they made sure that the client was satisfied, and this is another example of how Intrinium shows that they care for their clients.
Another skill that I gained from this internship is being accountable, whether it’s being accountable when I’m not able to complete a project on time or keeping others accountable in completing their projects. Additionally, to be accountable meant that I had that I needed the necessary resources to complete a certain task. For example, if I took on a coding project where I wasn’t familiar with the coding language, I was accountable for learning in my own time so that I was able to finish the project. Being accountable in my intern projects has helped me manage my time as well because if there was a due date for a project, I was responsible for planning out the timeline so that I would finish it on time.
My overall experience at Intrinium has been positive and a big factor is the people who work there because it shows that they are all passionate in what they do. Intrinium fosters a work environment that is challenging, but also an environment where growth is highly encouraged. This growth can be present through their performance or through their desire to take on a project that they have no prior knowledge of.
While I was the only intern, I have felt such an immense amount of support from my coworkers and my boss and this is the reason that my internship experience was so positive. My fellow coworkers were always willing to help me if I needed it and I would always offer my assistance in return. I can confidently say that I have grown, both intellectually and mentally. Not only have I learned more coding languages, but I have learned to be more confident in my work and that it’s okay to accept failure. But most importantly, I gained a new sense of professionalism and a clearer view of what it means to be in the professional world. I am thankful to have had this experience and I couldn’t have asked for a better group of people to work with. Having this internship experience will help me know what to look for when searching for future jobs and it has piqued my interest to pursue a career in Information Security.
