The Intrinium Review, December 2020

As the holiday season has ramped up and we get closer to the new year, you may be more distracted with holiday cheer than with cybersecurity – but these past two weeks have shown why individuals, companies, and nations must always be aware of bad actors and threats.

Officials were scrambling earlier this month to assess the nature and extent of a massive Cyber Espionage attack. According to officials, multiple federal government agencies, including the U.S. Treasury and Commerce departments, have had some of their computer systems breached as part of a widespread global cyber espionage campaign believed to be the work of the Russian government. Information about the event can be viewed here.

The issue of security at the highest levels of government has been a topic for some time throughout 2020. Suppliers throughout the Department of Defense supply chain received memos this fall from their biggest customers, mandating they demonstrate steps taken toward obtaining cybersecurity certification or risk losing out on new contracts. For many small manufacturers, it was a wakeup call to beef up their cyber defenses. This is not a trend that will be changing any time soon as these attacks become more brazen and prevalent.

The private sector is impacted just as drastically – FireEye, a cybersecurity company, revealed that its systems were pierced by what it called “a nation with top-tier offensive capabilities.” The breach is unusual for FireEye, which is in the business of cybersecurity itself. The FireEye breach is part of a massive trend of cyber-espionage against corporations and defense firms enabled through a patch vulnerability in the SolarWinds Orion product.

This type of attack can seem overwhelming to many, especially without assistance from a team who knows best how to identify and assist during such an event. If it can happen to such large institutions, how do you ensure your company, clients, and information remains safe? What can you do to prepare?

With Intrinium, you do have a team to turn to that ensures your information and peace of mind remains safe.
