Last Thursday, students, professionals, and hobbyists in the InfoSec world gathered for the first-ever Tribe of Hackers Summit in Austin, Texas, at the Capital Factory. Kylie M. headed down to the Lonestar state to represent Intrinium on the floor of the Summit.
The full-day event featured short TED-style talks to engage curiosity, the dialogue around topics that the book’s contributors are passionate about. The roster of speakers included InfoSec professionals alongside contributors from the 2019 book, Tribe of Hackers, Cybersecurity Advice from Hackers Around the World.
The conference was lively and invigorating for all attendees, giving everyone regardless of seniority or expertise the opportunity to learn, network and build relationships. For Kylie, she appreciated connecting with other people in the community, all of which had different backgrounds or paths they’ve taken within Infosec. Not only was she able to strike up several conversations with folks who contributed or participated in the event, but also walked away from the event with some new friends.
The Summit was accessible for everyone, the presenters intermingled with the attendees, which included hackers, security architects and GRC consultants alike. This allowed for a unique mix of different people and perspectives, really bringing to life the community feel of the event. The diversity was a catalyst to spark very engaging dialogue. The presenters brought a lot of interesting perspectives to the event, specifically, Keirsten Brager and Leslie Carhart discussed the Industrial Control System (ICS) problems they get to solve and how to get involved in the industry. Kylie learned a lot about the challenges they face and how drastically different they are from other industries.
This Summit was unique in so many ways but, most importantly, it focused on the people. Who they are, what they do, and what they care about. Kylie expressed that it truly fostered a level of camaraderie that was, very powerful and impactful for attendees. If you would like to see a full recap of the event, you may do so here.
Presenters: Marcus Carey, Keirsten Brager, Lesley Carhart, Ian Coldwater, Jeff Man, Brandon Perry, Jennifer Savage, Jayson E. Street, Georgia Weidman, and Jake Williams.

“Its not a failure when your research doesn’t pan out.”
So true! I’ve been working through my own perspectives about failure and how it’s just an opportunity to learn. Don’t quit, rework the model and try again. #ToHSummit #CrossCountryKylie #tribeofhackers #BeTheLearner

"Hackers don't just pop up fully formed out of the ground attacking things. Anyone can do security research. And if you care about the security of the technology you use, maybe you should." –@savagejen talking about security research at #TOHSummit pic.twitter.com/Mn61cs3fZ8

“Technology isn’t the solution… Technology is the problem.”
Interesting perspective! Hadn’t thought of it this way before. #RethinkingSecurity #ToHSummit #tribeofhackers #CrossCountryKylie— Kylie M(egatron) (@0xNBE1) May 2, 2019

Great knowledge drop about spotting a bad fit by @MalwareJake. Communication & finding the place that communicates in a way that jives w/ you is so important! If you can’t communicate, it makes it hard to move forward, both individually & as a team.#ToHSummit #CrossCountryKylie
